Week 20: Halfway There — How You Can Step Up

July 26, 2026 · Week 20

You're at the halfway mark. Week 20 is a turning point , the anatomy scan, the first unmistakable kicks, and the realization that this is really happening. Here's how to show up this week.

What She's Experiencing

Physically, she's likely past the worst of first-trimester fatigue and nausea. Energy is returning. But new symptoms are appearing: round ligament pain, itchy skin, leg cramps, and the beginning of back strain as her center of gravity shifts.

Emotionally, this week brings a mix of relief (halfway there!) and new anxiety. The anatomy scan is a big moment , it's the most thorough check of the baby's development so far. Even in a low-risk pregnancy, the wait for results can be nerve-wracking.

Your Job This Week

  • Go to the anatomy scan. This is not an appointment to miss if you can help it. The sonographer will check every organ, the spine, the brain, the heart chambers. You'll see fingers, toes, and maybe a yawn. It's the first real “this is a whole person” moment.
  • Ask what you can see. The sonographer is focused on measurements, not narration. Ask “what are we looking at right now?” and “is that something we should be concerned about?” Your job is to be the second set of eyes and ears.
  • Plan something gentle afterward. Whatever the results, the anatomy scan is emotionally intense. Have a plan , coffee, a walk, takeout , so the rest of the day isn't a letdown after the adrenaline.

What to Say

During the scan: “Tell us what you're seeing when you can. We're learning as we go.”

If she's nervous beforehand: “We'll be in it together. Whatever they find, we'll know more than we did before, and that's always better.”

Afterward: “That was incredible. I can't believe we saw their heart.”

Partner Check-In

Week 20 is often when the pregnancy starts to feel real for partners in a new way. Seeing the baby on the screen , moving, stretching, with a visible spine and four heart chambers , changes something. It's worth pausing to let yourself feel that, rather than jumping straight back into logistics.

If you've been holding back emotionally because “it's early” or “anything could happen,” this is the week to let yourself connect. The second trimester is statistically the safest period. It's okay to believe this is happening.
