Cruising, first steps, first words, and the transition to toddlerhood
Month 10 and Climbing
Your baby is now highly mobile. They cruise along furniture, may stand alone for a few seconds, and may take their first independent steps. They love to push and pull toys, open and close cabinets, and empty containers. Your baby understands many words and can follow simple commands like give it to me. They may wave bye-bye and point at things they want. Solid foods now include most soft family foods cut into safe sizes.
Month 11 Solving
Your baby is becoming a problem solver. They figure out how to get what they want, whether by pointing, pulling your hand, or finding creative ways to reach out-of-reach objects. They imitate your actions, like talking on the phone or stirring with a spoon. Some babies say one or two words with meaning. They understand simple questions like where is your cup? and will look in the right direction. Continue introducing a variety of textures and flavors in food.
Month 12 First Birthday
The first birthday marks an extraordinary transition. Many babies are walking or taking several steps independently. They can feed themselves finger foods and may hold a cup with help. Your baby may say one to three words with meaning. They understand far more than they can say. Negativity, brief tantrums, and a strong preference for doing things their own way begin to emerge. These are normal signs of growing independence. Sleep is about 12 to 14 hours total with one or two naps.
Looking Ahead to Toddlerhood
As your baby becomes a toddler, their world expands rapidly. They will test boundaries, assert their independence, and need consistent, patient guidance. Your job is to provide a safe environment, respond to their cues, and remember that every milestone will be reached in its own time. The first year has been remarkable. The second year will be just as challenging and rewarding.
