The Birthing Stage

Pushing, crowning, and the birth of your baby

labor

The Resting Phase

When the cervix is fully dilated, there is sometimes a lull, 10 to 20 minutes with few or no contractions. This is normal. The baby is rotating and descending. Rest while you can.

The Descent Phase

The urge to push builds in waves, 3 to 6 surges per contraction. Let your partner follow their body's lead. Spontaneous bearing down (following the urge) is more effective and less exhausting than directed counting.

Crowning and Birth

The baby's head stretches the perineum. This is an intense burning sensation. The caregiver will guide the birthing person to slow down or pant to control the speed of delivery and minimize tearing.
