Strategies to Help Your Partner Cope in Labor
Practical tools for every stage of labor
The Three Rs
All effective labor support rests on three foundations: Relaxation means releasing held tension in the body, especially the jaw, shoulders, and pelvic floor. Rhythm is any repetitive, predictable pattern of breath, movement, or sound that the birthing person can follow. Ritual means doing the same thing the same way with every contraction, creating a familiar pattern the body can trust. If one of these three is breaking down, that is the thing to address. Watch for signs that the birthing person is losing their rhythm, and step in before they spiral further.
Touch and Positioning
Firm pressure calms, light touch agitates. Use counterpressure on the sacrum, double hip squeeze, and position changes every 30 to 60 minutes.
Verbal Support
Use short, positive phrases. 'Right here with me. Just this one.' 'That one is over. Rest now.' Your voice is an anchor. Keep it calm and steady.
