What Early Labor Feels Like
Contractions feel like strong menstrual cramps or a dull ache in the lower back that comes and goes. They may be 5-20 minutes apart and last 30-45 seconds. Most people stay home during this phase.
What Your Partner Needs
Rest, distraction, and gentle reassurance. Your partner is not in severe pain yet but may be anxious about what is coming. Early labor is a great time for last-minute preparations.
How You Can Help
- Stay calm and relaxed, your mood sets the tone
- Encourage rest between contractions, put on a movie or music
- Offer light snacks and clear fluids if your partner is hungry
- Help with last-minute bag packing or house tidying
- Time contractions occasionally to watch the pattern, not obsessively
- Call the caregiver when contractions reach the 5-1-1 or 4-1-1 pattern, or when your partner feels ready
