Music and Aromatherapy During Labor
How sound and scent can support comfort and calm
Why Music Helps
Music activates the limbic system, the part of the brain that processes emotion and memory. Familiar, rhythmic music can lower stress hormones, reduce perceived pain, and help your partner maintain a steady breathing pattern. Music also helps block out hospital noise and creates a private atmosphere in the room.
Choosing Music
Using Scent
Aromatherapy uses essential oils to influence mood and comfort. Lavender is the most studied oil for labor and is associated with reduced anxiety and perceived pain. Peppermint can help with nausea and provide a cooling sensation. A few drops on a cloth that your partner can hold or that you wave near their face is enough. Do not apply oils directly to the skin without diluting them in a carrier oil. Check with the hospital about their policy on scents, as some units restrict them.
Setting the Atmosphere
If the hospital allows it, dim the lights in the room. Bright lighting increases alertness and tension. If the room has a window, close the curtains. Your partner may want to wear an eye mask during rest. The combination of dim light, familiar music, and a calming scent can create a bubble of safety even in a busy hospital room.
