What's available and what it means
Before You Need This Information
Reading this before labor means you won't be learning about these options for the first time when your partner is in active labor and you're being asked to help your partner decide quickly.
Epidural Block
A thin catheter is placed in the epidural space of the lower back. Medication flows continuously. It is the most effective pain relief available in hospital birth.
IV Opioids (Fentanyl, Morphine, Stadol)
Pain relief through the IV, takes the edge off without eliminating sensation. Does not remove pain; reduces it.
Nitrous Oxide
Inhaled through a mask during contractions. Takes the edge off without eliminating sensation. Not available at all facilities.
No Medication
A fully non-medicated labor is achievable, especially with continuous support. The comfort measures in this app, movement, water, breathing, counterpressure, are evidence-based and effective. If the birth plan calls for no medication, your role as an engaged, present support person is the single biggest predictor of success.
