techniquessensitive

Why Do It

Regular perineal massage in late pregnancy helps prepare the birthing person to release tension in the perineum during birth. Research shows it reduces the incidence of episiotomy. The greatest value is in rehearsing the relaxation response, during birth, the birthing person will still feel intense stretching but will already know how to relax through it.

When to Start

Begin 4-6 weeks before the due date. Do it several times a week. If your partner finds it easy to relax, twice a week may be enough. If it is challenging, do it more often.

How to Do It

Follow these steps with clear communication throughout:

CAUTION

Do not do perineal massage if your partner has an active infection, herpes sore, or inflammation in or near the vagina. Consult the caregiver or a pelvic floor physical therapist if there are concerns.
