Rest 10 Minutes Every 90
How honoring your body's natural activity-rest cycle improves recovery
Your Body Runs on 90-Minute Cycles
Your body naturally cycles between activity and rest every 90 to 120 minutes. After about 90 minutes of focused activity, your brain and body need 5 to 10 minutes of rest to reset. When you override this cycle with caffeine, stress, or sheer willpower, you accumulate a rest deficit that catches up with you. In the postpartum period, when you are already sleep-deprived and healing, honoring these cycles is essential.
How to Apply This Postpartum
Pay attention to your energy slumps during the day. When you notice your focus slipping, your energy dropping, or your patience wearing thin, do not push through. Take 5 to 10 minutes of deliberate rest. Lie down. Close your eyes. Breathe. Let your mind wander. Do not check your phone.
The Support Person's Role
If you are the support person, watch for signs that the birthing person is pushing past their natural rest cycle: irritability, tearfulness, rushing, or saying they are fine when they clearly are not. Offer to take the baby for 10 minutes. Remind them that resting is how the body recovers.
