Self-Hypnosis and Affirmations for Labor
Using the power of the mind to reduce pain and fear
The Mind-Body Connection
Self-hypnosis is a tool for shifting the mind's belief about birth. If the mind believes birth is dangerous and painful, the body produces stress hormones that create that experience. If the mind believes birth is a normal, manageable process, the body produces endorphins and oxytocin that create a different experience entirely. Self-hypnosis is not being asleep or unconscious. It is a state of focused attention where the mind is open to positive suggestion. Practice daily before birth so the state is accessible when you need it.
Affirmations That Work
Effective affirmations are short, present tense, and positive: 'Each surge brings my baby closer.' 'My body was designed for this.' 'I can do anything for one minute.' 'I trust my body.' Practice daily before birth.
The Support Person's Role
Learn the birthing person's affirmations and say them during contractions. Your calm, steady voice repeating a trusted phrase can anchor them when they feel overwhelmed.
