What Kind of Partner Will You Be?
Understanding your role and how your partner wants you to show up
There Is No Single Right Way
Birth partners come in all shapes. You might be the baby's other parent, a spouse, a sibling, a friend, or a doula. What matters most is that you understand what the laboring person wants from you, and that you show up ready to provide it.
Questions to Ask Before Labor
Have an honest conversation about these scenarios before the big day. There are no wrong answers, but knowing where your partner stands changes everything.
How You Might Feel
Your feelings matter too. You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, helpless, exhausted, or terrified at points, this is normal. The book poses a series of questions to help you anticipate your own reactions: How will you feel when your partner vomits, cries, criticizes you, says 'I can't do this,' or asks for an epidural? Thinking through these now makes them less destabilizing when they happen.
The Best Preparation Is Knowing You Can't Control Everything
Your job is not to fix labor or take away pain. Your job is to be present, responsive, and steady. That is enough.
